The round of University and TAFE Open Days is in full swing, with thousands of would be students (and their anxious parents) visiting campuses and considering course options. With so many options available, it is understanding that many students are left confused and uncertain about their future career path.
You may have received some career counselling from your school or your views may have changed over time, but below is a Career Choice Checklist to assist you in choosing the career path that is right for you.
Career Choice Checklist
- What do I like doing?
You may not know exactly what career to follow, but by now you will have some fairly good idea of what you actually enjoy doing. Perhaps you love being creative, or making things with your hands? Alternatively, you may enjoy helping others, or making order out of chaos; you may even just love being outdoors.
- What am I good at?
Now is the time to be very honest with yourself. There is absolutely no point in following a career path that does not play to your skills. You may love the idea of a particular career, but you will only be setting yourself up for disappointment if you are not strong in the key areas required.
- University / TAFE
Look at what you want to study, not where. While there may be some geographical considerations, make sure your choice of course suits you…..not your friends.
- Work & Traineeships
Perhaps you have had enough of formal study for now and want to start earning some money! Consider starting a traineeship which will give you a qualification while working.
- Keep your options open!
The world is changing so quickly that your future career may not even be in existence yet. Unless you are 100% committed to a specific vocation, look at courses which will give you a broad base of transitional skills.
Remember that whatever path you choose to follow, it is your path. If you have true passion for what you are doing, you will be successful.
